Over the summer, Acura officially announced that the Integra would make a triumphant return in 2022. Just a few days following that, CarBuzz exclusively reported the Japanese luxury brand had also secretly filed trademark application rights for the "Integra Type S" name.

Today, Acura has yet another revelation: the 2022 Integra will be a five-door hatchback, proof of which comes by the way of a new teaser image.

"Just like the original Integra, which helped launch the Acura brand in 1986, the fifth-generation Integra will be a premium sport compact with striking five-door design," the carmaker said in a statement.

Looking more closely at the new image, we can make out the sloping roofline flowing into a short rear deck and a small integrated lip spoiler. The LED taillights also look great. No additional new details are known at this time, but we highly suspect the new Integra will share a platform with the latest generation Honda Civic, itself available as a five-door hatch.

There's a very good chance there will be both an Integra and Integra Type S - just like the Civic and Civic Type R. If that is indeed the case, then the Integra Type S will essentially be a more luxurious and, possibly, a more powerful version than the next-generation Type R.

We predict Honda will keep the current model's 2.0-liter turbo-four, producing 306 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, though a series of upgrades are a given. There have been some rumors indicating a hybrid, all-wheel-drive setup is planned. One way the next Type R and Type S can be further differentiated is for the former to retain the combustion-only powertrain while the Acura will go hybrid and incorporate the brand's excellent Super-Handling AWD system.

Anything is possible, quite honestly. We'll just have to wait until next spring to see what Acura has in store.
