The more things change, the more they stay (mostly) the same.
Although the big reveal won’t officially happen until July 18, Chevrolet is making more details available about its all-new C8 Corvette. Just after announcing it will add a second shift at its Bowling Green, Kentucky assembly plant to support C8 production, GM has now officially unveiled the next Corvette’s updated logo. We previously showed you a leaked image of what was highly suspected of being the new logo, but now we can confirm it’s the real deal.
The Corvette’s logo dates back to the original C1 but it’s been regularly updated over the decades. The last time this happened was for the C7. Comparing the C7 and C8 logos side by side, it’s quite clear the latter has a sharper pitch to the V-shaped design. The pattern on the left-hand side checkered flag is darkened. The fleur-de-lis at the top left no longer has a line underneath it.
The new logo is also now outlined in black instead of silver. Generally speaking, the C8’s logo is a fairly conservative update, especially when compared to the radical transformation of the new vehicle itself. For the first time in its long life, the Corvette is switching to a mid-engine setup as Chevrolet engineers have concluded they’ve done everything possible to extract maximum performance from the front-engine layout. Zora Arkus-Duntov, the so-called "godfather” of the Corvette, Zora Arkus-Duntov, wanted to make the mid-engine switch as far back as the 1960s, but GM management always rebuffed his plans.
As an engineer, Arkus-Duntov was keenly aware of the benefits a mid-engine design offered in terms of not just performance but also handling. And now his wish is finally happening, some 23 years after his passing. And by the way, the new C8 logo will not only be plastered on the car itself but will also be displayed in the infotainment system and gauge cluster startup animations. We’re currently at less than three months until the 2020 Corvette is fully unveiled. We can hardly wait.
