And an American won World Luxury Car of the Year, too.

The winners of the 2023 World Car of the Year Awards have been announced, and for the second year running, Hyundai has bagged three categories. In the overall category, the finalists included the Alfa Romeo Tonale, BMW 2 Series Coupe, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and the Nissan Ariya. But the jurors' clear winner was the Hyundai Ioniq 6, which also managed to bag the titles for the 2023 World Electric Vehicle and the 2023 World Car Design of the Year. The Ioniq 5 was similarly impressive last year, and in our first drive of the Ioniq 6 recently, we were highly impressed.

As if that's not noteworthy enough, sister company Kia took home the World Performance Car trophy with the EV6 GT.

Even the World Luxury Car award was won by an electric vehicle, but an American impressed most in this category.

Hyundai

The shortlist for the Luxury category included the BMW 7 Series and i7 and the Genesis G90, but it was the Lucid Air that walked away with top honors. "This honor by the World Car Awards' jurors is validation of our goal to create a new kind of luxury sedan," said Derek Jenkins, Senior VP of Design and Brand at Lucid Group. "Lucid Air not only highlights the company's focus on EV range and performance, but it's extremely compelling to look at while offering a fresh interior environment that embraces the company's California origins."

Elsewhere, the 2023 World Urban Car is the Citroen C3.

Kia

Hyundai has totally dominated the World Car Awards, with even the World Car Person of the Year Award going to the South Korean brand's design boss, the visionary SangYup Lee. He was the man behind the Ioniq 6 and was understandably proud to receive the award.

"We always want to connect with customers on an emotional level and with the design of the Ioniq 6 we have created truly one of a kind," said Lee. "The daring streamliner styling combines strong emotional appeal with aerodynamic efficiency to give exceptional range. Inside, we set out to create a personal studio which offers the mindful space and calm functionality which, we believe, elevates EV design."

With a decent starting price of $41,600, it's sure to be a popular car with consumers just as much as with judges.
