One Of Only Three 1964 Ferrari 275 GTB/C Speciale Is Looking For Its Next Well-Heeled Owner

Perhaps one of the most special Ferraris will be auctioned by Mecum Auctions with the 1964 Ferrari 275 GTB/C Speciale by Scaglietti. The unit - with serial number 06701 - is just one of three in existence, but it is believed this is the only one made available in the market, at least any time soon.

The Ferrari 275 may not have replicated the success of its predecessor, the 250 series, but there were still special cars to bear the 275 moniker, like this model for sale. It was developed to continue the strong outing of the 250 GTO at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the '60s during a fight with Ford.

Ferrari built three 275 GTB/C Speciales between 1964 and 1965 specifically for FIA homologation and factory development. Each comes with super-lightweight aluminum bodywork and a type 213/Comp dry-sump engine with six Weber carburetors. Other specs include a 250 LM type exhaust with side pipes, GTO-style aluminum bucket seats, and an outside aluminum fuel filler cap for faster fueling during pit stops.

More specifically, the power unit was a 3.3-liter Colombo V12, considered one of the best 12-pot mills of all time, along with the F140, Daytona SP3, and LaFerrari. The engine makes around 300 horsepower, sent to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transaxle.

The particular example on sale was completed in 1965. Despite the efforts to homologate the 275 GTB/C to go racing in the GT Class, the FIA denied the request as the car submitted was considerably under the advertised dry weight of the road-going 275 GTB. But a compromise was reached, and only one - with chassis number 06885 - was allowed to compete at the 1965 edition of the Le Mans, finishing third overall.

The 06701 was sold directly from the factory to Pietro Ferraro of Italy in May 1965, registered to his paper-producing company Cartiere del Timavo. It is believed the car color was changed from the original Rosso Cina to Grigio Scurro Metalizatto before the purchase. Four years later, the ownership was passed to Alessandro Gregori.

Gregori owned the car for two years before being shipped to the UK, bound for Colonel E.B. Wilson of London. Wilson then passed the ownership to Michel Pobrejeski of Boulogne-Billancourt, who owned the car for 25 long years. Bodywork modifications were made during the first decade of its lifetime for better ventilation to the engine. Pobrejeski also painted the car red.

Ferrari collector Brandon Wang was next in line to own the 06701. He entered the car to historic events, including the International Historic Festival at Goodwood. It was also driven on the Tour Auto in 1997 when the two-tone silver and grey color scheme was returned. A year later, just after completing restoration work, a collector purchased the car and displayed it at the FCA National Concours in Los Angeles in 2002, and then was purchased at an auction in 2014.

In 2015, the car was displayed at the 14th Cavallino Classic in Palm Beach in January and Laguna Seca for the Monterey Historic Races in August. Since then, the 06701 has been preserved by the current owner, Leslie Wexner.

Mecum Auctions will sell the 1964 Ferrari 275 GTB/C Speciale at the Kissimmee 2024 next year. As of this writing, the information on the site is still blank, so we are not sure of the events from 2015 to 2023. However, it is believed Wexner repainted the car red. Some enthusiasts speculate the vehicle will be sold for nine figures, making this lot exciting to watch.
