Own This One-Off 1978 Corvette Complete With Turbine Engine

It's basically a C3 with a jet engine.

Heading to auction next month at Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale, Arizona, is this one-off 1978 Chevrolet Corvette. No big deal, right? Well, it is actually. Remember it said "one-off" in the title above. A guy named Vince Granatelli, son of Andy "Mister 500" Granatelli, decided to stuff a Pratt & Whitney ST6B turbine engine under this Corvette’s long hood. The Granatelli family was involved in Indy car racing a few decades ago. So why did the younger Granatelli want to take on a complicated project like this? Because it’d be awesome once it was done.

This heavily customized Corvette turbine has a total of around 880 horsepower and, according to an old Motor Trend test, can go from 0-60 mph in 3.2 seconds. Its creator claims it can make that run in just 2.5 seconds. And yes, this thing is fully street legal. In order to make that happen, Granatelli had to fabricate a new subframe, reinforce the driveshaft, and add a reduction gearbox to bring the engine’s 37,500 rpm to 6,230 rpm. In addition, the whole car had to be rewired in order to handle a flight-age instrument panel. The brakes were swapped out in favor of NASCAR–spec discs, and new fuel lines and a muffler system were put in place. It’s basically a C3 Corvette with a jet engine. The auction will take place starting January 10, 2015.
