Petersen Museum Opens Stunning Porsche Exhibit With 40 Famous Cars On Display

Classic Cars / Comments

The Petersen Automotive Museum, in collaboration with Porsche Cars North America, is unveiling a never-seen-before display from April 16 until April 2024.

This year, Porsche celebrates 75 years of existence, and to mark the occasion, Porsche Cars North America has partnered with the Petersen Automotive Museum to create a new exhibit that will run for a year starting from April 16. The exhibit is called We Are Porsche and "focuses on how influential figures in the US helped transform Porsche from a builder of niche sports cars to a cultural phenomenon over the past 75 years."

More than 40 classics will be on display on the museum's first and second floors, with the exhibit also drawing attention to the people who have contributed to the brand's popularity.

Stories on folks like Patrick Dempsey, Steve McQueen, Dan Gurney, Hurley Haywood, Ken Miles, and other famous fans of the automaker's cars will highlight how Porsche rose to prominence, but the main attraction is undoubtedly the cars, which will include classics like the 1953 550 Spyder raced by Betty Shutes and Ken Miles and the 1958 Carrera GT Speedster campaigned by Bruce Jennings, a car that became the winningest Carrera GT Speedster in history.

The original "Outlaw Porsche," Dean Jeffries' custom 1957 356 Carrera, will also be displayed, as well as Porsche's first and only Formula 1 racecar to date, Dan Gurney's double race-winning 1962 Porsche 804. These cars are pictured below, with more images in the gallery at the bottom of this article.

The Herbert Brundage/Brumos 1973 911 2.8 RSR driven by Peter Greg and Hurley Haywood that won both the IMSA and Trans Am championships will make an appearance too, along with the 1973 917/30 Can-Am Spyder driven by Mark Donohue. If you're not into racecars, don't worry.

The exhibit will also feature Steve McQueen's 1976 Porsche 911 Turbo and the Porsche 911 S driven by Jennifer Connelly in Top Gun: Maverick. The blue 918 Spyder from Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is scheduled to appear too, as is the Porsche from Cars. It's unclear if the exhibit will feature the Sally Special or simply a lifesize replica of the animated 911 from the film, but either is awesome.

The exhibit will have these cars on rotation, so it's worth more than one visit over the next year.
