We once again return to another installment of Hoonigan's smash YouTube series This vs. That for a doozy of a race between two very unlikely competitors. We've seen the Hoonigan crew occasionally pit ridiculous machines against one another before, but these days it seems like this mismatched style of racing is becoming the norm. In this week's installment, we get to watch a raving mad 850-horsepower Baja Bug take on Hoonigan's very own Chevrolet C8 Corvette. At first glance this race seems totally unfair: the Baja Bug has significantly more power, it weighs much less than the 'Vette, and it simply looks more badass, but never underestimate aerodynamics and OEM consistency.

First, let's take a look at Eric Connor's 1970 Baja Bug. This radical VW bug is powered by a built 418 cubic inch LS3 V8 engine strapped to a 4.3-liter Whipple supercharger. This setup produces 850 horsepower and over 650 lb-ft of torque, all of which is sent to the rear wheels. This bug is known for popping wheelies on public roads and snapping axles. The Hoonigan C8 Corvette is mostly stock and features simple mods like a set of coilovers and some aftermarket wheels on stock tires. The standard LT4 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine makes up to 495 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque, and power gets sent to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. On paper, these two cars couldn't be more different, but only the track will tell which is faster.

In the first race, the two cars go head-to-head over 1,000 feet. The Baja Bug takes a clear jump at the start, but the C8 follows, and we all know that a chase is a race. The two cars cross the finish line neck 'n neck but the Baja Bug gets the win. In the second race, the cars go head-to-head once again. This time the Bug once again gets the jump and keeps pulling. For the bonus round, the Corvette gets the hit, and capitalizes on the advantage by taking the win, even though the Baja Bug struggled for traction down the line. We suspect that this would have been a much closer showdown if the Bug hadn't jumped at all, but this just goes to show that power is not everything.
