Polestar took its time making a name for itself, but the Swedish EV maker gained tremendous momentum recently.

Currently, it only has two cars for sale in the USA. The Polestar 1 had the challenging task of making people sit up and take note of Volvo's performance sub-brand branching off and doing its own thing. Soon after the halo model arrived in the states, the more practical Polestar 2 debuted, receiving mostly positive reviews.

The Polestar 3 is set to arrive in 2022, but the Polestar 4 is what enthusiasts are looking forward to the most. It will be more affordable, and therefore more accessible to the masses.

Polestar's CEO, Thomas Ingenlath, said it would be more ground-hugging and coupe-like.

At Polestar's recent media briefing, Ingenlath revealed even more. The Polestar 4's price is higher than expected, but not too rough considering the direct rivals. When it launches in 2023, it will come with a price tag of $63,000.

In short, it will be Polestar's most valuable model. Polestar expects the midsize SUV segment to grow by nearly 50% by 2025, making the 4 a precious commodity. It will eventually bypass the 2 to become the top-seller in the range.

The Polestar 4 will rely heavily on Geely's Sustainable Experience Architecture. This architecture was created by Polestar's Chinese parent company, which says it's completely open-source. It will also be built in China at Geely's Hangzhou Bay facility.

Even though it's more affordable, the 4 will use the same twin-motor setup as the Polestar 2. That means 408 hp and 487 lb-ft of torque at the very least if Polestar doesn't make some minor adjustments before then.

The big surprise is Polestar's primary target. As a semi-conservative Swedish brand, we thought they'd aim for the apparent German trio. Instead, Polestar is setting its sights on Porsche, specifically the upcoming electric Macan.

That's a big target to aim for, especially since Porsche now has some experience with EVs following the successful introduction of the Taycan.
