The Swedish automaker's new EV will be unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Show.
Swedish electric vehicle manufacturer Polestar has announced that it will reveal its fourth product at the upcoming Shanghai Auto Show on April 18. The Polestar 4 is touted as a coupe SUV that "marries the aerodynamics of a coupe with the space of an SUV in a package enhanced by modern technology," and as the included teaser shows, this vehicle will employ the same clean, angular design elements that have made the Volvo offshoot so distinctive with its previous models. Speaking of, the new SUV coupe will be joined by the Polestar 3 on its stand and the recently-updated Polestar 2, both of which have never been seen in Public in China before.
Polestar says that design elements and "sustainability enhancements" first seen in the automaker's concept cars will make their production debut here, but the part we're most interested in is the claim that the Polestar 4 will be "the fastest Polestar production car to date." We assume the automaker is referring to top speed here. The Polestar 2 can reach 127 mph, the Polestar 3 can manage 130 mph, and the original Polestar 1 tops out at 155 mph. Presumably, the Polestar 4 will have a top speed of somewhere around 160 mph. Interestingly, parent company Volvo announced three years ago that all of its new cars would be limited to 112 mph, so Polestar continues to act as a more performance-oriented take on sleek Swedish design.
"Polestar 4 is not simply a modified version of our first SUV," promised CEO Thomas Ingenlath. "Instead, we reconsidered the entire design to create a new breed of SUV coupe." Polestar remains a fringe automaker for the time going, but its momentum is picking up, and the promise of a new take on a very popular body style could be just the trick to accelerate the brand's growth in the mid-term. Simultaneously, the promise of exciting handling and stunning looks from the Polestar 6 halo roadster will help make the brand more aspirational, feeding long-term growth. Polestar is starting to come into its own, and if the innovative concept-inspired features promised above are as fascinating as they sound, that positive momentum can only continue.
