Now that the Polestar 2 has entered production, work has begun on its successor: the Polestar 3. Whereas the Polestar 2 is a fastback electric sedan designed to compete with the Tesla Model 3, the Polestar 3 is an electric SUV that will rival the Tesla Model X and Jaguar I-Pace. As the company's first-ever electric SUV, this will be an important model that will enable Polestar to conquer the US market.

As part of this strategy, the Polestar 3 will be manufactured in the US alongside new Volvo cars at a shared production facility in Ridgeville, South Carolina. This means Polestar will have production facilities in China and America, two of the largest electric car markets in the world. "Polestar 3 will be built in America, for our American customers," said Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar's Chief Executive Officer.

"I remember the great response when I first shared Polestar's vision here in the USA and I am proud that our first SUV will be manufactured in South Carolina. From now on, the USA is no longer an export market but a home market."

Polestar is serious about stealing sales from Tesla in the US; by the end of the year, it plans to open 25 dealerships known as Polestar Spaces across America. "Production in the USA reduces delivery times as well as the environmental impact associated with shipping vehicles around the world. It will even have a positive impact on the price of Polestar 3," said Dennis Nobelius, Chief Operating Officer at Polestar. "All of this makes the brand even more competitive in the critical American sales market."

For the first time, Polestar has shared a teaser image of its Model X fighter hiding under a sheet, previewing its slick design. We only get to see the profile, but from the teaser, we can see the Polestar 3 will sport a low roofline, prominent wheel arches, sharp character lines, and a subtle roof spoiler. Underpinning the Polestar 3 is a new dedicated electric platform, which should enable a longer range. For reference, the Polestar 2 has a range of up to 233 miles.

Like the Polestar 2, the Polestar 3's infotainment system will be powered by Android, and the electric SUV will be equipped with an abundance of semi-autonomous safety tech. Production of the Polestar 3 is expected to begin in 2022. After the Polestar 3 arrives, a production version of the stunning Precept Concept will become Polestar's answer to the Tesla Model S.
