Back before the global pandemic, supply chain issues, and ongoing international conflicts decimated production timelines at automakers across the globe, we were told to expect the arrival of a new Polestar EV in 2021. We learned that, while it would draw inspiration from the Precept concept, it would not be a sexy sedan but an SUV. Since then, we have been shown the shape of the car but have had the finer details obscured with extensive camouflage. That started to change when, late yesterday, Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath uploaded a shadowy teaser video to Instagram with the news that there would more info to follow today.

That additional info has now arrived in the form of our first unrestricted look at the production design of the Polestar 3, the brand's first SUV.

Polestar not only gave us our first clear image of the car but also revealed that the production version will be premiered "in October 2022." Obviously, entering the SUV market is very important for any automaker, and as we move towards autonomy, the Polestar 3 will be ready.

"Polestar 3 will, over time, offer autonomous highway piloting powered by the best-in-class LiDAR sensor from Luminar and centralized NVIDIA computing power."

The new EV will, at launch, feature a dual-motor drivetrain and "a large battery, with a range target of over 600 km/372 miles (WLTP)." Expect a considerably more conservative estimate for the EPA cycle.

Polestar has gone on to explain that customers can expect to be able to order the new SUV "in initial launch markets from the day of the premiere." Production of the EV is expected to get underway in early 2023, with manufacturing to take place in the US and China. And this should be fun to drive too.

"Polestar 3 is the SUV for the electric age," says Ingenlath. "Our design identity evolves with this high-end large luxury EV, with strong, individual brand character. With this car, we bring the 'sport' back to the SUV, staying true to our performance roots."

As exciting as the new electric performance SUV is promised to be, the Swedish brand is not stopping there and plans to launch a new car every year for the next three years, starting with this Polestar 3.
