After officially announcing its amicable split from Volvo as a performance division sub-brand, Polestar is wasting no time teasing its upcoming new performance car as an independent carmaker to take on the likes of Mercedes-AMG and BMW's M division. October 17 has already been penned as the date when Polestar will be lifting the wraps off its new car, but in the meantime the automaker has shared a series of teaser images on its Instagram page giving us an early glimpse of its first car. As teaser campaigns go, this one is rather creative.

Whereas most teaser campaigns either contain a close-up of a panel or a darkened image of a silhouette, Polestar has uploaded a set of square images that form a puzzle with numbered pieces that show a small portion of the car. When put together (image via AutoExpress), the resulting image appears to show segments of a performance coupe featuring wide wheel arches, an aggressive rear diffuser and slim taillights that seem to take styling cues from Volvo. It's also finished in white which may not sound like a significant detail, but Polestar cars have traditionally been blue so this seems like a way to help Polestar create a new identity as a standalone brand.

Rumors have suggested that Polestar's performance coupe will produce 600 horsepower by utilizing a plug-in hybrid powertrain from the Volvo XC90 T8. Polestar's long-term plan is to introduce a range of fully electric performance cars, but whether the car that's about to be revealed is one of them remains to be seen. At this stage, we still don't know if Polestar's first car will be a concept or a production car, but all will be revealed in just over a week.
