Gaining a stronghold on the ever-growing electric vehicle segment goes further than attractive design and impressive gadgetry. Automakers know this and, as such, have been scouring the globe in search of suitable partners that will further improve technology and place them in an advantageous position, come the future.

An example of this can be seen with Mercedes-Benz. The German carmaker has teamed up with Sila to bring cutting-edge battery technology to the market for the electric G-Wagon. This will afford the electric brute impressive driving range when it debuts. Not to be left out, Polestar has also announced a strategic partnership, with the hopes of improving charging technology in the future.

The makers of the Polestar 2 have invested in StoreDot, a company that specializes in fast-charging batteries for electric cars. By 2024, the Israeli company hopes to produce EV batteries that can glean 99 miles of range in a mere five minutes.

This could put Polestar at the front of the charging pack. The alliance will see the two companies working together, with StoreDot applying its state-of-the-art technology to Polestar vehicles. The EV maker says experiments are well underway, with customized cell technology for faster charging already being looked at.

Five-minute charging stints sound like something from the future but, if successful, Polestar's CEO Thomas Ingenlath has said these innovative charging solutions could be pressed into duty as early as 2026. "Charging and range anxiety are common concerns holding owners of combustion engine cars back from making the switch to EVs," added Ingenlath.

He's not the first automotive CEO to admit to this. Previously, Ford's Jim Farley has conceded that the Blue Oval's charging infrastructure isn't up to scratch; a chink in the company's armor and something that would understandably irritate would-be EV owners.

StoreDot's CEO echoes these sentiments. Commenting on the partnership, Dr. Doron Myersdorf remarked, "we know that our technologies have huge potential to eradicate charging and range anxieties for future Polestar owners."

Volvo is also forging paths in the field of innovative EV charging. A fleet of XC40 Recharge electric vehicles are a part of a pilot project that sees the aforementioned SUVs employing wireless charging. This will bring further convenience to EV owners, should it prove successful enough to be used on a larger scale.

Hopefully, Polestar and StoreDot's partnership can bring about some game-changing charging technology. The ability to gain 99 miles of charging range in just five minutes is incredible and will undoubtedly make the prospect of EV ownership more appealing to consumers.
