The Pontiac G8 was designed to be a true American competitor to the infamous BMW 5 Series. Yes, we've heard this all before from all of the American automakers that they too have built a proper BMW rival. I remember specifically the Lincoln RS. It was a good quite, but still, not quite there. Pontiac finally delivered with the G8. Originally designed for the Australian market by Holden, it's based off the rear-drive Zeta platform (which is also the basis for the Chevrolet Camaro).
This large four-door rear-drive sedan came with a standard 3.6 liter V6 producing 256 horsepower. But the real news was the 6.0 liter V8 option that had 361 horsepower in the GT model. It can go from zero to 60 mph in just a little over five seconds. Considering how large and heavy the car is, that time is absolutely fantastic. An American automaker has finally proven that it can build the poor man's BMW.
