The classic 911 Targa removable panel roof design will return to the lineup later this year.
We’ve known for some time that Porsche had plans to return the classic Targa hard top option to the current 991-gen 911. This design first appeared way back in 1965 but disappeared from the 911 lineup when the 993 911 debuted in 1993. The previous 997-gen Targa had a folding glass roof but not a removable panel like those earlier models. And now our intrepid spy photographer has managed to catch a Targa 991 911 test mule out winter testing in Sweden.
Disguised as a convertible, the Targa design will incorporate a removable center roof section and a Targa roll-bar that helps to give the car more of a classic look. There’s still no word whether there are plans to offer the Targa option with the rear-wheel-drive 911 as it was previously only available on the Carrera 4 and 4S. Expect to see the new 911 Targa debut later this year as a 2014 model.
