By this point, even the Porsche purists have mostly made peace with the idea of the Cayenne. Though it has been difficult for us… I mean, them, to accept it; the truth is that the Cayenne is the model that saved Porsche, and funded the continued development of the 911. And the evidence of this, the 500,000th Cayenne unit to be built by Porsche, just recently rolled off the assembly line at Porsche’s manufacturing plant in Leipzig, Germany.
The exact vehicle which hit the milestone was a white Cayenne S Diesel, ordered by a customer in Austria who came to the plant to pick up his new SUV. This isn’t just the sort of thing which customers do when their vehicle is a milestone, and Porsche says that thousands of Cayenne customers have done this, taking the opportunity to drive on Porsche's on and off-road track at the facility. The Cayenne is now more popular than ever, so we can all look forward to more and better 911 variants as well.
