The force is strong with this one.
Star Wars fans were just treated to the final trailer for the upcoming Episode 9, 'Rise of Skywalker.' The trailer showed tons of emotion-inducing moments like the return of Billy Dee Williams' character, Lando Calrissian, and an epic scene featuring a massive assortment of starships from the Star Wars universe. Our Star Wars knowledge doesn't go deep enough to name them all but many of the ships have appeared in previous movies, TV shows, and video games based on the Star Wars mythology.
So what does any of this have to do with cars? Well, just last week, Porsche teased an upcoming partnership with Lucasfilm to promote the new film. The teaser video featured the new Taycan Turbo S, which we thought might tie into the Star Wars universe in some way. As it turns out, Porsche has other plans in mind.
We thought it would be too much of a stretch for the Taycan to appear in a Star Wars movie, so Porsche will instead design its own starship in support of the upcoming film. "Developing a spacecraft with clear Porsche design DNA is exciting and challenging," says Michael Mauer, Vice President Style Porsche at Porsche AG. "Even though they do not seem to share many elements at first glance, both worlds have a similar design philosophy. The close collaboration with the Star Wars design team inspires and fascinates us - I'm sure that both sides can draw major benefits from this exchange."
"The worldwide appeal of the Star Wars and Porsche brands is shaped decisively by their iconic designs," says Doug Chiang, Vice President and Executive Creative Director of Lucasfilm. "We are bringing together two worlds with this project: the exotic film design of a galaxy far, far away and the precision work that goes into developing emotive Porsche sports cars. This collaboration promises to produce an innovative design that will blend the best of both brands to create an exciting new starship worthy of Porsche and Star Wars."
Porsche says the design team will meet regularly in Stuttgart and San Francisco, California to style the new spacecraft. The completed spacecraft will be revealed at the December premiere of 'Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker' alongside the company's first-ever electric car, the Taycan. Given the timeframe of the design, we don't expect the Porsche spacecraft to actually appear in the movie but it will undoubtedly look great.
