Porsche has always had a strong presence on the silver screen. One of its most memorable is the Porsche 911 Turbo from Bad Boys which has since becomea highly sought-after collectible. More recent cameos include the Taycan in Netflix's Red Notice which is unlikely to be as iconic as the Turbo's role. Its next cinematic venture will be with Top Gun: Maverick, a short trailer of which aired during this weekend's Super Bowl.

Playing on the original movie's "I feel the need for speed" quote, the trailer showcases snippets of the movie in-between promotional footage of some of Porsche's cars. A clip at the end gives us the indication that a special silver Porsche 911 S will make an appearance in the movie. We see a short frame of this car parked beside Tom Cruise and co-star Jennifer Connelly.

The trailer then states "Porsche and Top Gun. Together Again". In the original 1986 movie, a black Porsche 356 A Speedster was one of the star vehicles used by McGillis' character, alongside the iconic Kawasaki GPZ 900 R ridden by Cruise. Interestingly, this particular example wasn't an original car, but rather a replica created by Intermeccanica.

With that in mind, Porsche's relationship with Top Gun isn't as concrete as what it was with other titles at the time, such as Bad Boys and No Man's Land. Although Top Gun: Maverick is due in theatres on May 27, 2022, we were already given a teaser into the franchise's relationship with Porsche last July, which featured Cruise behind the wheel of a new 911 GT3.

Here, the movie star who has an affinity for speed and motorsport went to battle with ex-Formula One veterans Mark Weber and David Coulthard for a series of challenges to promote the track-focused car and upcoming movie. The trio, together with TV presenter Steve Jones used the car in a series of challenges that were focused around fighter jet missions.

Of course, the Porsche 911 GT3 is not something you would use as a warfare vehicle but is certainly capable of providing a thrilling experience. The latest generation of the model employs the brand's naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six engine which develops 502 horsepower and 346 lb-ft of torque. This is sent to the rear wheels with your choice of a seven-speed PDK or six-speed manual gearbox.
