Fuel has just been added to the rumors of a new model slotting between the Porsche 911 and 918 with the supercar maker from Stuttgart registering the "919" name at a German patent office. The combination of numbers has been listed as a "word mark," which means it will be used in an upcoming production model. Of course, there's no way of knowing if Porsche's new sports car will get the 919 moniker. Previous reports indicated it would carry the 961 name, although that might have been merely an internal designation.

It's just as likely the carmaker is simply protecting the name for future use, stopping other companies from claiming it in the meantime. Porsche CEO Matthias Muller has confirmed that four new models will be added by 2018. An entry-level sedan, currently codenamed the Pajun, is a possibility, additional Panamera derivatives are also in the pipeline, while the Macan - a smaller version of the Cayenne - is expected by the end of 2014. One way or another, it's clear that Porsche's days of focusing all its attention purely on the 911 range are long behind us.
