Porsche Releases Cayenne S Diesel

2012 Paris Motor Show

A diesel truck that does 0-60 in 5.7 seconds. Where do we sign up?

As the six-cylinder Cayenne Diesel is finally introduced to the US market, Porsche has unveiled a new, more powerful diesel-powered version of the popular luxury SUV. Packing a 4.2-liter turbodiesel V8, the new Cayenne S Diesel offers up a solid 382 horsepower but a monstrous 626 lb-ft of torque. That's a significant jump on the existing Cayenne Diesel's numbers: 142 hp and 220 lb-ft, to be precise, translating to a 0-62 mph time of 5.7 seconds and a 157 mph top speed.

That's not too shabby for diesel truck, all that while returning 28 mpg on the US combined cycle and emitting just 218 grams of CO2 emissions per kilometer, helped along by a stop/start system. The Porsche Cayenne S Diesel can also tow 3,500 kg and can be driven for almost 750 miles on a single (albeit optional 100 liter) tank of gas. Porsche claims the new V8 diesel, earmarked to join the Panamera lineup in 2013, has a distinctive sound akin to its traditional V8 gasoline units. As you would expect of a Porsche 'S' model, the Cayenne S Diesel comes with a host of performance upgrades.

Look for bigger brakes identified by the silver brake calipers, a rear-biased all-wheel drive system with optional torque vectoring and new intakes up front. Following its world debut in Paris this month, the new Cayenne S Diesel will go on sale in Europe in January 2013 priced at 77,684 Euros. If the time it took to bring the six-pot Cayenne Diesel over is anything to go by, don't expect this new addition to arrive Stateside anytime soon.
