For those know don't know their motorsport history, the 917 is what gave Porsche its first overall 24 Hours of Le Mans wins in 1970 and 1971. Back then the car was truly state-of-the-art when it came to its lightweight materials, aerodynamics and power to make the ideal endurance racer. With Porsche preparing for its long-awaited return to the Circuit de la Sarthe in 2014, it has released this cool new video with vintage footage showing the iconic 917 and highlighting the number of records it set in '71.

For example, it had an ultra-light 42 kg magnesium tubular frame that set a new standard in lightweight construction and Jackie Oliver posted the fastest lap time, which wasn't broken until 2010 by Audi. Check out the clip below for a race through motorsport history.
