Many buyers were disappointed when the 2020 Porsche Taycan arrived sporting a 201-mile range in Turbo form and only a 192-mile range in Turbo S guise. Both figures were far off Tesla's range estimates for the Model S but it quickly became apparent that these numbers were underestimated. The less powerful Taycan 4S increased the range to 203 miles but it was rumored than an even more efficient, less powerful version would be introduced.
Porsche has now announced a new entry-level, rear-wheel-drive version of the Taycan. This new variant will be offered with two battery sizes each with varying levels of power. It may offer the longest range of any Taycan model to date but there is a downside. The car will only be offered in China (for now).
The entry-level Taycan includes a single-deck Performance Battery with 79.2 kWh. This is the same battery found in the 4S, only, in this case, it sends power to a single electric motor in the rear producing 402 horsepower in over-boost mode with launch control.
Buyers can also opt for the optional double-deck 93.4 kWh Performance Battery Plus, which is borrowed from the Turbo, bumping the output up to 469 hp. Porsche says the base Taycan can travel up to 257 miles on a charge (measured on the NEDC test cycle) while the larger battery brings the range to 303 miles. Factoring in for the differences between the NEDC and EPA test cycles, we'd estimate the base Taycan between around 180 to 211 miles of range. Without the second electric motor, the RWD Taycan is also slightly more practical with 17.3 cubic feet of storage thanks to a larger front trunk.
Both models can hit 60 mph in 5.4 seconds and top out at 143 mph, so there isn't a significant performance advantage when opting for the larger battery. In China, the base Taycan is priced at 888,000 yuan (around $125,000) or 948,500 yuan (around $134,000) for the Performance Battery Plus option. Like the range estimates, the pricing figures can not accurately be converted into dollars, as a Taycan 4S costs just $103,800 in the US. Porsche hasn't announced when the RWD Taycan will be sold stateside but if it does become available, we expect pricing to start under the six-figure mark.
