The Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo has suffered a slight setback. Porsche announced last March its new all-electric sport wagon, a production version of the Mission E Cross Turismo, would go on sale by the end of this year. Unfortunately, that launch date can't be met.

According to Bloomberg, Porsche CEO Oliver Blume has confirmed the Cross Turismo will debut instead in early 2021. "The change is no disadvantage for us; we just optimized the cycle plan," Blume said. The coronavirus pandemic probably has something to do with the slightly delayed rollout plan, but it's important to know that Porsche, as a whole, is more than holding its own. Sales have remained solid enough that Porsche still expects to achieve a double-digit profit margin for 2020.

Porsche, along with Tesla and Toyota, has weathered the pandemic storm better than all other brands. All three maintained profitability in the first half of this year despite factory closures and reduced sales. How did Porsche manage to do so well while so many others didn't? Thank strong sales of the Taycan, 911 Turbo and 911 Targa.

The first few months of 2021 are going to be a busy time for Porsche. Not only will the Taycan Cross Turismo finally have its long-awaited debut, but Porsche will also begin accepting orders for the just-revealed and refreshed 2021 Panamera lineup. The coronavirus period did force Porsche to cut back on numerous expenses deemed unnecessary, but investments designated for additional electric vehicle development and digital services were left untouched.

One of those investments is the joint Porsche-Audi project that will result in an advanced EV architecture with Tesla directly in its crosshairs. By 2025, Porsche estimates nearly half of its global vehicle sales will consist of plug-in hybrids and pure battery electrics. An all-electric Porsche Macan, due in 2022, will play a significant role in that.

For now, Blume did not provide a rescheduled Taycan Cross Turismo reveal date, but the likely online-only event could happen as soon as January or February.
