The Porsche Taycan is a truly magnificent machine. Available in numerous flavors and with more recently added, it's a very practical, stylish, fast, and comfortable car, and people have been buying them up in droves. Despite this, Porsche clearly doesn't think that enough people are convinced by its first all-electric product and has been setting multiple Guinness World Records with the car to prove its superiority.

The sexy electric has completed the longest drift in an EV, set the fastest indoor land speed, and achieved the greatest altitude in an EV. All impressive feats, but the Taycan has yet another feather to add to its cap, having just smashed the coast-to-coast charging record.

If that sounds like an obscure and insignificant record, allow us to clarify exactly what it means. The standard 2021 Taycan (equipped with the Performance Battery Plus) is now the vehicle with the shortest charging time to cross the United States. The previous record was a time of seven hours, 10 minutes, and one second, but driver Wayne Gerdes obliterated this by completing the trip from Los Angeles, California to New York City, New York - a distance of 2,834.5 miles - with a cumulative charge time of just two hours, 26 minutes, and 48 seconds. Basically, this means you can traverse the entire country with less than two and a half hours of charging time.

"Comparing charging performance from a variety of EVs I have driven to date, the Taycan sets the bar," says Wayne. "The first time I charged on a 350-kW charger, six to 82% occurred in just 22 minutes." EV naysayers, please explain how EVs are too impractical for long trips?

Supporting Wayne in his quest was the Electrify America app, which allowed him to plot his route in conjunction with Plug Share. To ensure that the record was valid, he had to meticulously note every single stop and have independent witnesses present for each charge. In addition, every mile on the road was filmed, GPS tracked, and accounted for before being certified by a panel of adjudicators ahead of the record being confirmed.

As you can imagine, Wayne was elated with the result: "I'm proud and honestly a little surprised to have set the new benchmark by such a margin. The Taycan performed even better than expected. Its performance, comfort, and road-holding were excellent, but the standout metric alongside the charging capacity was its efficiency. I'm grateful to both Porsche for supporting me and to Electrify America's network, which made it possible."
