This could be an early mule for the next-generation Porsche Cayman.
It was just a few days ago when a new prototype of the hardcore Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS was spotted racing around the Nurburgring practically naked. Now, another Cayman prototype has caught the attention of our spy photographers, and it looks unlike any other Cayman in Porsche's lineup. Spotted at the Nurburgring, the mysterious black test mule is fitted with aggressive fender flares and has a noticeably wider track than the current Cayman. To test the chassis and suspension, the fenders are filled with foam. What exactly is Porsche cooking up here?
One possibility is that Porsche could be testing an early mule of the next-generation Porsche 718 Cayman, which could have an electric powertrain for the first time in its model history.
Allegedly, Porsche will present an electric Boxster concept this year previewing its electrification plans for the 718 sports car series. Like the Macan, there's a good chance the next-generation electric 718 Cayman and Boxster will be sold alongside a traditional combustion-powered model. If it enters production, it could use the same dedicated PPE electric platform as the new Macan, which possibly explains the prototype's wider track.
However, the mysterious prototype doesn't have any "electric test vehicle" warning stickers we're used to seeing on EV prototypes.
Unfortunately, our spies were also unable to tell if the widebody Cayman was using a combustion or electric powertrain because a loud Lamborghini Huracan STO drove past at the same time, but the lack of stickers suggests it could be a test mule for the new combustion-powered Cayman.
Alternatively, Porsche could be using the Cayman mule to test a new mid-engine supercar that will slot above the 911 Turbo S, but this is unlikely as the prototype lacks ceramic brakes that you would usually find on a mid-engine sports car. Hopefully, it won't be long until we find out what Porsche is cooking up here, but we're very intrigued.
