According to Porsche, pretty much all of its current cars feel at home on a race track, but it acknowledges that they're great to experience through a set of twisty roads on a scenic mountain pass. We'd argue that the car that does this best is the special Porsche 911 GT3 Touring but we can't deny the aspirations of its other products.

Affording all of its customers the ability to immortalize these special moments on the road, Porsche has announced a new Free Drive expansion for its Track Precision app. No longer will it be used exclusively for race tracks. Now you can use it every time you go for a spirited drive.

Porsche says its customers are already well-acquainted with the Track Precision app and how it automatically activates when your car's telemetry indicates that it is conducting hot laps around a circuit. By looking at the vehicle position, speed, engine speed, braking force, and more, it will identify an iconic moment that you may be experiencing while on the limit and record a one-minute video.

Free Drive mode will pay attention to more relaxed driving events by focusing on high braking pressure, strong accelerations, or higher G-forces. If you feel that the app has missed a notable event, you'll have the option of manually identifying one. To create a more holistic piece of content, the app will also combine the video footage with any photos you may have taken while enjoying your drive.

Unfortunately, the app is not going to allow you to use its time tracking functionality so you won't be able to track how fast you are through your favorite mountain pass. The new update will also be a handy complementary tool if you're looking to make use of Porsche's recent virtual track creator project that lets you enjoy your favorite roads in the comfort of your own home.

Brand ambassador and test driver Jorg Bergmeister put the app to use while behind the wheel of a Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo - which recently gained access to Track Precision - with some results that impressed him. "On the race track, it's all about lap times and direct competition," says Bergmeister. "Here on the Rossfeld Panoramastrasse, I can just enjoy the drive without any pressure at all. With the new Free Drive function, spectacular moments are automatically recorded. Later on, I can simply pull up the documented drives in the app and revisit those moments.
