It will be on dealership floors shortly.
Acura recently revealed that production of the new MDX Type S has begun at its factory in East Liberty, Ohio. The Japanese manufacturer says this new halo model will arrive in dealerships shortly.
The Type S will sit at the top of the MDX range and is marketed as a high-performance variant. It's Acura's most powerful SUV yet, and it has a price tag to match. It will be built exclusively for the American market at Acura's local assembly plant.
"The associates at the East Liberty Auto Plant did a great job on the flagship MDX earlier this year, and it is a testament to their challenging spirit that they have created Acura's first performance SUV model, the MDX Type S," said East Liberty Auto Plant General Manager Jun Jayaraman. "Our team went above and beyond in manufacturing an SUV that is worthy of wearing the Type S badge, and we are very proud of the result."
The MDX Type S is powered by a turbocharged V6 producing 355 horsepower. This engine is built just down the road at Acura's engine plant in Anna, Ohio. In fact, the entire Type S was designed and engineered in the US by Acura's development center. Guess where it's located. Yup. Also Ohio.
To control the power, all Type S models come standard with an adaptive air suspension with various driving modes, Brembo front brakes, and large 21-inch wheels with high-performance tires.
As it's the halo model in the MDX range, it also comes fully equipped with luxuries like nine-way massaging front seats and a new 25-speaker ELS Studio 3D Signature Edition audio system.
The MDX Type S is the second Type S model to arrive in the US, not counting the famous NSX Type S. An updated version of the NSX boasting 600 hp will be the third. According to Acura, it's entering a whole new era of Type S models.
Earlier this year, Acura introduced the TLX Type S, but the one we're looking forward to is the all-new Integra Type S, which will most likely be the fourth model to be launched in this new Type S era.
