Off-road trucks are all the rage these days. Pretty much anyone that makes a truck also makes a more focused, off-road variant of the standard truck. TRD-branded Toyota Tundras crisscrossing the Rockies likely outnumber the total population of Denver. The Ford F-150 Raptor is another obvious example, but Ram has theirs too. The Ram 1500 has both the Rebel and TRX trims, making the 1500 one of the most off-road focused of the trucks by number of trims.

Soon, there could be another off-road-focused Ram truck in the lineup, likely based on the existing Rebel trim. Or it could be a new catalog of parts for the existing Rebel. It's hard to tell right now, but a 2019 concept built for SEMA and some recent patent filings might help to clear things up.

The concept is the truck you see above and below. The Ram 1500 Rebel OTG (Off The Grid) concept was built to show what an overlanding Ram Rebel would look like for SEMA. It included an integrated winch, traction mats, a high-lift jack, roof tent, snorkel intake, and much more. Even before all the fancy off-road gear that was tacked onto the concept, the 1500 Rebel was a pretty feature-packed off-roader, with locking diffs, a sizable lift, and grippy A/T tires to name a few.

The patent filings themselves were made on 23 July 2020 and were only published on April 12th. Aside from the missing roof rack, they look identical to the 2019 SEMA concept truck. The filing document states this is only a patent for the design and not any engineering features.

Its clear Ram intends to do something with the OTG concept, but what exactly the automaker is planning is still unclear. Obviously, with the design now patented, we could see mechanical patents follow, but since the concept didn't boast anything mechanically unique, this is unlikely. What remains to be seen is whether or not this will be put into production, or whether Ram will simply sell a bunch of toy cars using this design. We've often seen sneak peeks of unrevealed cars through toy design patents, so this could simply be that.

Time will tell, but we wouldn't be opposed to a new special trim like this.
