Magna has announced that its ClearView technology has officially made its production debut on the Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks.

This clever piece of safety kit aims to reduce blind-spot accidents by incorporating camera and mirror technology into what looks like your traditional interior mirror. The system comprises exterior mirrors with integrated cameras, as well as a high-mounted stop lamp with an additional camera. Data captured by Magna's software is then fed to the interior rear-view video mirror, providing the driver with incredible visibility while towing.

The Canadian-based firm says ClearView has the potential to reduce crashes and increase safety. Aside from that, it makes the vehicle easier to maneuver through tight spaces, something that drivers of large pickups will particularly appreciate.

The design is delightfully simple. Like JLR's ClearSight design, the driver can switch between a regular mirror or a video display. What sets this apart from other systems is that ClearView can show three camera views at one time. This, says Magna, is the first of its kind.

It's customizable, too. Motorists can adjust the brightness of the display, zoom in or out (handy if you're trying to monitor something), and even rotate and move images in every direction.

"This unique synergy combines our leading vision-based expertise with our mirror capabilities to create an advanced technology that promotes safety and gives the driver more information about the immediate surroundings," said Magna's Jeff Hunt.

For several reasons, trucks and SUVs are considered to be more dangerous for other road users when it comes to safety. Aside from slower reaction times and heavier curb weights, reduced visibility owing to vehicle size could also play a part in some crashes.

Technology such as this will help drivers be more vigilant and enable them to be aware of their surroundings. Hopefully, ClearView makes its way into other large vehicles from the Stellantis stable.

Magna is constantly innovating and recently previewed "Morphing Surfaces" at CES 2023. The unique system uses bendable panels fashioned out of thermoplastics, and mechatronics that enable them to open and close while the vehicle is on the move. The company says it has the ability to reduce aerodynamic drag by 10% and improve range by 5%.
