Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) has become the undisputed king of special edition cars. In the past year alone, the Ram brand has introduced several special edition models like the Ram 1500 Night Editions and the darker Limited Black Edition. FCA has also saluted the US military with special edition versions of the Dodge Charger and Dodge Challenger called the Stars & Stripes Editions.

We've spoken to FCA about why it releases so many special editions in succession. Basically, it allows every customer to feel special, even if they can't afford the top model like a Hellcat. Now, it's Ram's turn to honor the military with a new model called the Built to Serve Edition.

Based on the Ram 1500, the Built to Serve Editions honor the five United States Armed Forces service branches with several color choices named after military terms. These include Gator (1,000 units), Diamond Black (1,000 units), Ceramic Gray (1,000 units), Patriot Blue (1,000 units), Anvil (1,000 units), Billet Silver (1,000 units), Tank (1,000 units), Flame Red (1,000 units), Spitfire (500 units), and Bright White (500 units).

"Ram wants to honor those who are serving or have served the United States with distinction," said Reid Bigland, Head of Ram Brand. "For Ram truck owners - whether military or civilian - 'Built to Serve' is a maxim that they can be proud to stand behind. We also want to bring together Ram owners who are not currently serving to make a difference in their communities. We launched our Ram Nation volunteer organization in 2015 as a way to give our Ram truck owners a way to be involved when there's a need."

In addition to the unique colors, the trucks have distinct appearance options including a US flag and Built to Serve decals on the rear quarter panels. The trucks also receive unique 20-inch aluminum wheels with a Technical Gray finish and body-colored wheel flares. Inside, each of the five branches is represented by different colors including Light Frost, Light Ambassador Blue, Light Diesel Gray, Core Green, and Orange.

There are also plenty of US flags and Built to Serve logos sewn into the interior. Ram says this new edition is available on all body styles and powertrains and will include 4x4 Off-Road Group content including all-terrain tires, electronic-locking rear axle, hill-descent control, front suspension skid plate, steering gear skid plate, fuel tank skid plate, transfer case skid plate, tow hooks, and heavy-duty off-road-calibrated front and rear shock absorbers. There is no word on pricing but we expect this special edition to be an affordable add-on to the standard Ram 1500.
