Ram Recalls 280,000 HD Trucks For Transmission That Could Spark Fires

Recall / 4 Comments

The 68RFE six-speed automatic could leak fluid resulting in an engine fire.

If you're the owner of a 2020-2023 Ram 2500 HD and/or 2020-2023 Ram 3500 HD truck powered by the 6.4-liter Cummins diesel engine, then you need to pay close attention to this latest recall alert.

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA), in cooperation with Ram parent company Stellantis, has issued a recall for roughly 280,000 of these trucks equipped with the 68RFE six-speed automatic transmission. This is a global recall, and the NHTSA has confirmed 248,342 trucks are in the US.

The official recall document states that a build-up of pressure and heat inside the transmission may result in a transmission fluid leak from the dipstick tube. That's a problem when the engine is on, and the heat from it could spark a fire.

So far, Stellantis claims it's received 16 separate reports of fires and 48 complaints. One minor injury was also reported, though specific details were provided.

The 68RFE six-speed automatic is not a new transmission. It's been around since mid-2007. It's had some reliability problems over the years but nothing significant until September 18, 2019, when the issue was first reported, ending on November 4, 2022, when the automaker began containing suspected trucks still under plant control.

The Ram 2500 is affected more by the recall, totaling 199,377 units compared to 48,965 for the 3500. The Cummins turbocharged six delivers a total of 370 hp and 850 lb-ft.

It must also be noted that Stellantis still does not have a fix ready to go but confirmed owners can continue driving their trucks for the time being.

They should, however, contact a dealership and take appropriate action if they notice a Malfunction Indicator Lamp on the instrument cluster. The recall notice concludes that the automaker will notify dealers and affected owners on or about December 30.

Until then, owners of trucks with this engine and transmission combo need to pay close attention to any warning lights or other abnormalities.
