Land Rover wants the Range Rover Sport SVR to be the fastest SUV on the road. And by lapping the 20.8 km Nurburgring in 8 minutes and 14 seconds the gauntlet has well and truly been thrown down. The British carmaker claims the record was set by a Land Rover driver in a production-spec version of the potent SVR. To put the time in perspective, the Mercedes C63 clocked the Ring in 8:13, the BMW 1 Series M Coupe in 8:15 and the Honda NSX in 8:16.
The BMW X6 M is the next quickest SUV at the Ring with an unofficial time of 8:24. There's still no final word on powerplant specifications, but under the aggressive body kit lurks a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 rated at 542 hp. The Range Rover Sport SVR is the first high-performance SVR model to come out of JLR's new bespoke facility. A production model is expected to debut at the Paris Motor Show in October.
