"I feel the need - the need for speed." - Maverick.
Scientologist and supercar enthusiast Tom Cruise recently took an F1 racecar for a spin around a track out west. The actor met up with the Red Bull demonstration team and they let him show them the money... err speed, on the famed Willow Springs racetrack in California. Driving the Red Bull Racing Formula 1 car, Tom Cruise hasn't looked this cool since Top Gun. A 12-person crew flew in from Milton Keynes to assist the movie star.
Under the tutelage of 13-time Grand Prix winner David Coulthard, Cruise piloted the 850hp F1 racer to a within 4 miles of Coulthard's top speed, hitting 181mph. "Tom's the real deal. I was surprised that he picked it up so quickly and is such an accomplished driver. His recall was incredible considering how complicated driving an F1 car is. He's a guy who really pushes the envelope in real life. This day was not green screened. He thoroughly impressed me," exclaimed Coulthard of Cruise's performance and driving acumen. The 2.5 mile Willow Springs Race Track is located in Rosamond California.
Tom Cruise is currently in post-production and marketing his new Mission Impossible film 'Ghost Protocol.' The day was billed as a PR move for both Cruise and F1, as the latter returns to racing in the States after a four-year hiatus. Cruise's truly impressive driving skills prove one thing: The plaque for the alternatives is in the ladies room.
