According to a recent report from German car magazine Auto, Motor und Sport, Volkswagen will be unveiling a faster R version of the Beetle at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September. The Beetle R will likely receive the same 2.0-liter TFSI engine that powers the Golf R. According to the same source, the Beetle R will produce an output similar to the Golf R, which churns out 270hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. If all goes to plan, the Beetle R is slated to make its US debut sometime next year.

As long as VW doesn't significantly detune the engine, the newly upgraded Beetle could accelerate from 0-62 mph in a very respectable time of around 7.5 seconds. Pricing for the Beetle R is expected to begin somewhere in the neighborhood of €27,000. We'll hopefully have more specific details in the coming weeks.
