From outrageously opulent minivans to some of the most advanced driver-assist technology in the world, China is slowly making amends for years of curiously styled, copycat vehicles. One such Chinese automotive marque making a name for itself is Haval. The brand is owned by Great Wall Motors and produces some highly capable and classy SUVs in markets like South Africa. Having churned out a couple of more mature-looking crossovers recently, Haval is now showing its fun side with the reveal of the X Dog - yes, it's called the X Dog. Odd name aside, this blocky crossover also comes with a steering wheel featuring an integrated screen.

We've seen steering wheel designs like this before, but those were either concepts or patent filings that had yet to reach production. Notably, Hyundai recently filed a patent for a similar steering wheel design. Whereas Hyundai's design replaces the traditional instrument cluster, the Haval X Dog still has both an instrument cluster and central screen. One image shows no fewer than six screens in the front row. In pictures shared by CarNewsChina, the interior appears to be almost entirely devoid of traditional buttons. But like the cabin, the exterior is also unusually styled. A chunky grille, lots of plastic cladding, and rounded headlights give it the vibe of a Ford Bronco Sport. However, the overall look is not quite as resolved as the Ford.

At the back, the Haval seems to be composed of nothing more than a giant slab of sheet metal. The slim rear window looks like it was squeezed in as an afterthought, and we can't imagine it'll do the visibility any favors. Still, this is an SUV that could find favor with the younger crowd, especially with its two-tone exterior.

The X Dog will be powered by turbocharged engines with a capacity of either 1.5 or 2.0 liters. Outputs will range from 170 to 230 horsepower, and a plug-in hybrid model is on the way too. The quirky SUV will launch in China in the first quarter of 2022.
