The last time McLaren decided to build a race car outside of Formula 1, the F1 GTR won the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans. The final F1 GTR racing chassis was retired in 2005, and since then McLaren has focused almost solely on F1 racing. All that is about to change as McLaren's GT3, based on the new MP4-12C, has made its debut at Goodwood. A new aerodynamics package adorns the new GT3, containing new carbon fiber everything from the front splitter, door blade, rear wing and front bumpers.

The carbon fiber chassis is the same that is on the road car and the steering wheel is the same as the MP4-24 Formula 1 car. The McLaren GT team will build and develop the GT3 for a full year until they ship out 20 cars to private teams for the 2012 racing season.
