Rivian R1S Rescued After Owner Gets It Stuck In Abandoned Quarry On Christmas Eve

Offbeat / Comments

The R1S is a great off-roader, but it's not impervious to nature's most challenging terrain.

After what felt like an eternity, Rivian R1S SUVs are finally making their way to customers across the country. One eager owner was a bit too excited to test out the capabilities of their electric off-roader and, rather embarrassingly, got the sure-footed EV stuck in the mud.

The image, seen below, first surfaced on Reddit but has since traveled to all corners of the internet, prompting befuddled individuals to ask one question: how did this happen? According to the original poster, the driver attempted to traverse an abandoned quarry on Christmas Eve, but this didn't end well.

Weighing in at over 7,000 pounds, Rivian's first production SUV is a rather heavy brute. It comes as no surprise that the vehicle sunk into the mud and stayed there.

Judging by the picture, several attempts were made to rescue the Rivian. The smashed rear windscreen suggests a less-than-successful towing effort; the rope could have snapped and sent the hook crashing into the glass.

Elsewhere, the sprayed mud pattern on the rear doors points toward a futile endeavor to drive the Rivian out of its muddy prison. This worsened the situation, with the tires digging the car deeper. What's more, the freezing temperatures caused the mud to freeze, essentially cementing the SUV in place.

According to the original poster, the owner reportedly tried to pin the blame on his teenage son in an attempt to lessen the consequences.

If that's true, we're guessing the owner isn't in the running for any parent of the year awards. But at least his precious Rivian has been extricated from its undesirable resting point. According to Auto Evolution, the vehicle was soon rescued, although we're not sure if the car sustained severe damage or not.

We hope not, as it's unlikely to be a quick (or cheap) fix. We sympathize with the owner, who probably just wanted to test out the capabilities of their new toy.

Unfortunately, it didn't work out quite so well this time around. It's not the first time we've seen a rugged SUV thwarted by nature. We've previously seen a Jeep Wrangler stuck on top of a mountain ridge and another example in a body of water.
