Orders have been paused while the electric vehicle startup refines the design of the Camp Kitchen and its Gear Tunnel Shuttle.
In 2019, Rivian revealed a concept called the R1T, and one of the most fascinating features of this new vehicle was its Gear Tunnel, an added storage area behind the cabin separated from the bed of the truck. Since then, the R1T has reached production, and its Gear Tunnel has been further enhanced with ingenious add-ons like the Camp Kitchen, which folds out from the tunnel.
It's a brilliant idea showing that the automaker has found many new ways to tackle the luxury adventure lifestyle, but it seems that things are not quite perfect yet. In an email sent to reservation holders, Rivian has announced that the Camp Kitchen is being redesigned to make it even better.
"We are temporarily pausing production of the Camp Kitchen as we work to update its design," reads the notice. "Our goal has always been to create the ultimate outdoor cooking experience. As our team has continued testing the Camp Kitchen in various environments, we've found opportunities to refine the design and make our version of cooking in the wild even better. The redesign also includes updating the Gear Tunnel Shuttle, which is included in the Camp Kitchen package."
It's unclear what the changes will be, but Rivian has informed reservation holders that the Camp Kitchen and Gear Tunnel Shuttle have been removed from their orders so that they are not charged. Rivian will inform buyers when these items are available to purchase again.
While some will see the redesign as a positive development (who doesn't want a product that's better than they expected?), the downside is that others may be losing patience. Rivian has been unable to meet many of its production targets, and although supply challenges have affected legacy automakers to a similar degree to startups like Rivian, it's still not a good look for a new company trying to cement its place in the market. Hopefully, the changes that Rivian is making to the Camp Kitchen and Gear Tunnel Shuttle are noteworthy enough that buyers can overlook the delay. We'll report back once we know more.
