Rivian R1T Customers Ordering Long-Range Model Face More Delays

Electric Vehicles / Comments

The latest issue seems to be linked to Rivian's online configurator, but the problems may run deeper than that.

Rivian customers are still frustrated about being unable to order certain configurations of the R1T electric pickup truck, and those delays have continued for customers who want access to the Max pack battery with the longest range. In a new post on Rivian Forums, one customer shared an email that he received from Tony Caravano, the Head of Rivian Customer Engagement, confirming that the delivery window estimate for pre-order holders of the Rivian R1T with the Max pack has been further delayed.

"In January, R1T preorder holders with Max pack configurations were told you would receive a new delivery window estimate in late February," said the email. "Unfortunately, we will need to adjust that timing to April as we continue to make the necessary changes to the configurator."

The customer was further told that Rivian will reach out once the changes to the configurator are complete. An issue with the configurator seems like an exceedingly odd reason for deliveries to be delayed to this extent, and we have to wonder whether the EV maker is, in fact, still having issues meeting its production targets. One customer, who is a 2018 preorder holder, said this is "like the millionth time Rivian has sent me a delay email."

Last year, Rivian fell short of its production goal of 25,000 vehicles, but to be fair, it got quite close with 24,337 units produced. The chip crisis and general supply issues were partially blamed for the company having to reduce its 2022 production target by half from the original 50,000 units.

At the end of last year, some Rivian customers were once again left displeased when they were found that the best possible R1T configuration - quad motors with the Max battery pack - was unavailable.

At the time of writing, a visit to Rivian's configurator confirms that the quad-motor derivative can only be ordered with the Large battery pack, whereas the dual-motor version can be ordered with Standard, Large, or Max battery packs.

These limitations on what customers can order are doing Rivian no favors, as this could lose customers to rivals like Ford with its F-150 Lightning. Then again, even Ford, with its much larger production output, has been affected by the unavailability of certain models, with orders for certain Mustang Mach-E models being suspended last year.

Rivian's battles this year go beyond production issues and model availability, as it was forced to lay off 6 percent of its workforce to counter falling cash reserves. Hopefully, this promising startup will find itself on more solid ground as the year progresses.
