According to an insider report, BMW will keep the 8 Series range going for at least another decade. The news comes via Bimmerpost forum member "ynguldyn," who has been a very reliable source of information on all things BMW.

This contradicts a rumor by BMW Blog not too long ago, which claimed that only the Gran Coupe (four-door) version would survive into the next generation. It wasn't a surprising rumor because, although it was only revealed four years ago, the 8 Series has endured a troubled time on the market.

When it launched, many felt it was too expensive for BMW buyers, and many who could afford it were disappointed that it was nothing like its namesake. But if the above source is correct, the big 8 has found a niche.

According to the source, the current G15 (coupe) 8 Series and all three versions of the M8 (coupe, convertible, and Gran Coupe) will continue to be produced until October 2025. The G14 and G16 8 Series (convertible and Gran Coupe) will reportedly end production in June 2026. If this is accurate, why is it accurate? As recently as 2020, BMW dealers were complaining that selling the 8 Series was not easy, and the market continues to favor SUVs like the X5 and X7 over coupes, convertibles, and big sedans.

Well, BMW sold only a couple hundred models in the US in 2018 (keep in mind that the car was launched in June of that year), and although that improved vastly the following year, fewer than 4,500 examples left dealer lots. This was when things started to look especially bad for the nameplate, but the next two years saw the company sell over 7,700 examples.

With a decent uptick in sales, the 8 has found its audience, and as more expensive monstrosities like the XM become more common, the brand has certainly managed to convince the well-heeled to part with six-figure sums.

According to the automaker's North American sales figures for Q3 2022, 5,550 units have been sold this year. That means BMW is on track to sell roughly 7,400 units this year, but it will likely need a new recipe to continue moving the model.

Fortunately, the Bavarians are cooking something up already. According to the source referenced at the outset, the next-generation G75/G76/G77 coupe, cabriolet, and Gran Coupe will enter production in July 2026 and continue until June 2033. The M8 Gran Coupe is also scheduled to be produced in this period, but there's no mention of the M8 coupe or convertible. The future existence of the 8 Series may come at the expense of maximum-performance M8s.

Perhaps the M8 coupe and convertible will be reinvented as the supercars we dream of. Fingers crossed.
