Porsche recently took to social media to share a teaser for an upcoming product reveal. The shadowy image shows the rear ends of four different 2021 Porsche Taycan models, each in a different trim level and wearing a unique paint color. Three of the Taycans have clearly legible model designations on the back, while the fourth model on the left is too dark to distinguish. The three visible cars represent the current Taycan range, including the 4S, Turbo, and Turbo S, while the shadowy model is an upcoming new addition.

Alongside the solitary image is the caption: "Welcoming a new addition to the family. Stay tuned."

Though no specific date is provided, we have it on good authority that Porsche will reveal this new Taycan variant on January 20, 2021, and that the new addition will be the rumored entry-level RWD Taycan.

Porsche already revealed a cheaper Taycan with rear-wheel-drive for China, but now this model will be coming to Europe and most likely the US too. The model in the teaser is even wearing the same shade of paint used for the Chinese reveal. As a reminder, the base Taycan uses the same single-deck 79.2 kWh Performance Battery found on the 4S, but it only uses a single electric motor to drive the rear wheels instead of two motors to drive all four wheels.

The electric motor produces 402 horsepower when paired to the smaller battery with the over-boost mode and launch control. Buyers in China can also opt for the double-deck 93.4 kWh Performance Battery Plus from the Turbo, which bumps the maximum output to 469 hp. For reference, the Taycan 4S with the larger battery produces 562 hp. It's unclear if Porsche will offer both battery sizes in the US market.

It may not be as powerful as the 4S, but the base Taycan offers the best range in the lineup. The car can travel up to 257 miles on a charge, based on the NEDC test cycle, when equipped with the smaller battery. Opting for the larger battery increases the total range to 303 miles. Converting those numbers into EPA estimates, we'd predict the base Taycan will have anywhere from 180 to 211 miles of range. For reference, the Taycan 4S currently boasts the best range in the lineup at 203 miles, while the Turbo and Turbo S top out at 192 miles.

Along with a slightly better range, the base Taycan also offers a larger front trunk since there is no secondary electric motor up there. The Porsche Taycan 4S currently starts at $103,800, so we expect the base Taycan to be the first model in the range to sell for under six figures.
