S-Class Sedan

If you were surprised that Mercedes-Benz USA is only offering the new S-Class in S550 spec, just hold on. While the 4.7-liter twin-turbo V8 may be the only engine being offered in America initially, it's not the only powertrain option the new flagship sedan will offer. To start with, Mercedes is offering a number of other engine options overseas, including a 3.5-liter V6 gasoline-electric hybrid, a 2.1-liter four-cylinder diesel-electric hybrid and a 3.0-liter V6 turbo diesel. But wait, there's more.

We can expect a V12 version to cap the standard range, plus new S63 and maybe even S65 AMG performance models. But before the game is up, Mercedes will also offer a new 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 with about 329 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque. The engine is already being offered in China in the E400, and could replace the naturally-aspirated 3.5-liter V6 in the S-Class and other models. Just which powertrain options MBUSA eventually brings Stateside, however, remains to be seen.
