Saleen Announces New 351 Mustang

Muscle Car

Steve Saleen isn't about to let the Shelby GT500 have all of the fun, so the only logical thing he could do was plan a new 700-hp Mustang.

Saleen is a name long associated with powerful Mustangs. Unfortunately, it's been nearly 13 years since a Saleen 351 powerplant has been seen in a Mustang, but that's all about to change. Steve Saleen himself has just announced at the LA Auto Show that a new Saleen 351 Mustang is on its way. One of reasons for the long absence of such a car was because Saleen sold his company back in 2007, only to buy it back earlier this year with the goal of getting its mission back on track.

Although no official photos have been revealed just yet (simply because the car is still in development), we were treated to this teaser image along with some powertrain details. Under the hood will be a Saleen-engineered 351 cubic-inch V8 that will produce 700 horsepower and 655 pound-feet of torque when paired with the Saleen 296 supercharger system. The engine will be mated to a six-speed manual transmission that'll be equipped with a high performance Saleen clutch system and a 3.73:1 drive ratio. There will also be a 15-inch brake package and 5-spoke alloy wheel wrapped in high-performance tires.

Styling-wise, the car will have carbon fiber front splitter and side skirts, 20-inch wheels and even a functional butterfly hood scoop. No date official debut date was announced, but we expect the new Saleen 351 to be ready to hit the road sometime in the new year.
