Korean manufacturers are slowly starting to cash in on the compact crossover craze, offering stylish alternatives to the established rivals. Hyundai, for example, is busy teasing the quirky Kona named after an exotic island. Just as rumors have suggested, Kia's entry in the compact crossover segment is called the Stonic. No, we're not sold on the name either. Apparently, the marketing gurus at Kia came up with the name by combining the words 'Speedy' and 'Tonic,' which refer to the first and last notes on the musical scale.
It's supposed to stir up connotations of agility and offering something fresh in the competitive segment. The silly name may leave a lot to be desired, but Kia's new baby SUV looks undeniably stylish. Inspired by its bigger brothers, the Kia Sportage and Sorento, early design renders of the Stonic reveal a sweeping roofline, sculpted surfaces and a "uniquely designed roof rack" that give the SUV a sporty look. The design certainly shows potential, but don't expect the production model to look quite as radical. Those exaggerated alloys are a bit of a giveaway. The European-designed interior will offer similar design traits, surrounding you with "straight lines, smooth surfaces and geometric design forms".
It will be technically advanced, too, with smart packaging maximizing space for all occupants, and a floating screen that seamlessly blends smartphone access with the car's functions. Kia also says the Stonic will be the most customizable car the automaker has ever sold, with extensive options available inside and out. Kia isn't divulging any powertrain details at this stage, but the Stonic will most likely adopt the Rio's turbocharged 1.0-liter three-cylinder, 1.25-liter and 1.4-liter units. A 1.6-liter gasoline unit is expected in North America. It's also unknown if it will be sold with an all-wheel drive option or FWD only, but we'll likely find out when the Stonic makes its public debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September.
