There are a lot of cars – high-powered Europeans especially – that can crack 180 miles per hour. More than there are public roads that you can legally reach those speeds, at any rate. But most of them are two-door sports cars. The new Audi RS6 Avant, however, is most certainly not a two-door sports car. It's a five-door wagon. The wonder of it is that it can still reach that kind of speed, with room for your whole family (or a bunch of your friends) and all their stuff. But don't take our word for it, or Audi's for that matter.

This video shows Ingolstadt's new power wagon running down a deresctricted stretch of Autobahn, reaching (as far as we can see) a GPS-verified top speed of 298 kilometers per hour. That's 185 mph to us yanks, though the video's producers indicated that it hit 305 km/h (over 189 mph), which is the top speed which the manufacturer says it will do (when equipped with the optional Dynamic Plus package). But then the tarmac looks rather wet in the footage, which may be of little concern for Audi's signature Quattro all-wheel drive system, plus the weather was surely chilly enough to keep the engine running as cool as possible.

Audi also says it'll run to 62 mph from a standstill in 3.6 seconds, which is mighty impressive for a vehicle weighing over 4,500 pounds (unladen). But the driver in this video managed to dispatch with the run in just 3.47 seconds.

The big wagon packs a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 rated at 591 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque, dispatched to all four corners through an eight-speed automatic transmission. That's less punch than either the Mercedes-AMG E63 S Wagon (with 603 hp and 627 lb-ft) or the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo (677 hp and 626 lb-ft), but it'll still handsomely outmuscle 99% of the other cars you're likely to meet out on the open road.
