Last month, Shelby American teased a new monster Mustang. Although the American tuner has started embracing electrification, we speculated that Shelby could revive the GT500KR based on the Mustang GT500. Turns out we were right because the GT500KR has is returning for a new generation - and it's faster and more extreme than ever. Available for the 2020-2022 Shelby Mustang GT500, the GT500KR "King of the Road" package will be limited to just 60 examples per model year in the US to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Shelby America next year.

The current Mustang Shelby GT500 is already the most powerful Mustang road car ever made, but Shelby American has installed a 3.8-liter supercharger with a high-volume intercooler, heat exchanger, and open cold air intake system to extract more power from the muscle car's venerable 5.2-liter V8.

Combined with a cat-back exhaust system, these modifications add an extra 140 horsepower for a total of over 900 horsepower when running on high-octane fuel, making it the most powerful GT500KR yet. And yes, it's still street legal.

In addition to the extra muscle, Shelby has fitted a carbon fiber hood, front splitter, and rear diffuser. Other upgrades include adjustable front and rear springs, Shelby rocker stripes, 20-inch forged aluminum wheels wrapped in high-performance tires. 2022 model year cars will also wear anniversary badges celebrating Shelby's 60th anniversary.

Only 225 Shelby GT500KRs will be built spread across the 2020-2022 model year. 180 are allocated to the USA, with 60 built per year. Pricing starts at $54,995 for the 2021 Shelby GT500KR and $127,895 for the 2022 model. Production of the Shelby GT500KR production will start in Q1, 2022.

This is only the third time the Shelby GT500 has received the King of the Road treatment. Launched in 1968, the first Shelby GT500KR was powered by a 428 Cobra Jet V8 rated at 335 horsepower. It was also enhanced with retuned suspension suspension, a redesigned front and rear end, a custom fiberglass hood and Cougar taillights. Offered as a fastback and convertible, 1,570 GT500KRs were sold to dealer sin 1968.

40 years later, the Shelby GT500KR returned with a supercharged V8 producing 540 horsepower, a short-throw shifter, 3.73:1 rear axle and unique wheels, tires and suspension settings. Other modifications include A special composite hood with push button hood pins, unique stripes and badges distinguished the KR.

"Sixty years ago, Shelby American and Ford Motor Company collaborated on their first car, the Shelby Cobra," said Joe Conway, CEO of Shelby American. "That relationship resulted in racing championships, victories over Ferrari at Le Mans and amazing Shelby cars based on the Ford Mustang. Today, we offer a line of Ford-based Shelby trucks and cars and have begun exploring electric vehicles. Every 2022 model year vehicle we build will wear a 60th anniversary badge to symbolize our heritage and bright future, beginning with the Shelby GT500KR."
