Are you scared of snakes? You soon will be.
It's been 50 years since the famous Shelby "Super Snake" Mustang shook up the auto industry, with its unprecedented performance that went far beyond the standard GT350 and GT500. To commemorate its 50th anniversary, Shelby revealed a new Limited Edition Super Snake at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction, limited to just 500 models with a lower starting price of $69,995. Alternatively, you can have a standalone package fitted to your current Mustang for $36,795.
Shelby American collaborated with Ford Performance to improve the performance and handling capabilities of this special Super Snake. The independent suspension has been sharpened and the brakes have been upgraded with massive calipers and rotors. Under the hood, Ford's 5.0-liter V8 is now supercharged to produce 670 horsepower as standard. If that's not enough, you can opt for optional superchargers which crank out over 750 hp. As a result, a "properly optioned" Super Snake will hit 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds on pump gas and Michelin street tires, and blitz through the quarter mile in 10.9 seconds. We're already sold.
The Limited Edition Super Snake will also sport its own unique styling quirks, including a new hood, rockers, spoilers, splitters, grilles, fog lights, rear tail panel and rear diffuser assembly, while the bodywork will have special anniversary stripes and badges. This theme continues in the interior: obligatory anniversary logos adorn the seats and floor mats, and you also get special door sills, a gauge cluster with exclusive Shelby by Autometer wireless gauges and the official Shelby serial number on a dash plaque. "The 2017 Super Snake represents American muscle in the truest sense," said Vince LaViolette, Shelby's Vice President of Operations.
"It delivers full-throttle excitement at every turn, all wrapped in a chiseled, handsome body. We designed every aspect of the car to be leaner and more functional than previous models. No other car offers so much performance and styling for the price." It's certainly been an eventful week for muscle car fans, with the reveal of the 2018 updated Mustang and new details on the Challenger SRT Demon. This new monster Mustang from Shelby is just the icing on the cake.
