Last year Shelby American revealed a 1,000-horsepower Mustang to celebrate the company's 50th anniversary. Appropriately called the Shelby 1000, the car was one last goodbye present to all of us from the late, great Carroll Shelby. But here's the thing: one of Shelby's final death-bed requests was for his company to continue building horsepower-rich cars. It appears his wishes have been honored with the 2013 Shelby 1000, set to make its debut later this week at the New York Auto Show.

Instead of 1,000 ponies under the hood as in last year's model, the company has cranked up output to an even more Texas-sized 1,200 hp. How was this done? Starting off with a stock 2013 Ford Shelby GT500, the 5.8-liter V8 was stripped down to the block and given an array of upgrades via improved engine internals and forced induction as well as a cooling package. An adjustable suspension and larger brakes were added in order to handle that extra 200 hp. Sound good? We thought so, but the price may have you thinking twice: $154,995 will get you just the upgrade kit, plus another $54,650 for the donor GT500 Mustang.
