Continuing Carroll Shelby's legacy in style, Shelby American is currently hard at work on creating the 2013 Shelby GT500 Super Snake with these pictures showing the beginnings of the project. Disassembling a brand-new 2013 GT500 may well make you wince, but the final results will be worth the pain if the 800hp 2012 model is anything to go by. That particular car included a Racing handling pack, a Borla exhaust system, Shelby/Baer brakes, 20-inch Alcoa wheels, and unique livery and trim.

More importantly it made 750hp in base trim and 800hp with all the options. Given the 2012 GT500 managed 550hp, it's not inconceivable for the 662hp 2013 GT500 to be transformed into a 900hp + Super Snake. As the build progresses over the coming weeks, we'll find out where Shelby American is going with this and how much they plan to sell it for. Previous Shelby special projects include the 2008 Shelby GT500KR, a 40th Anniversary edition that came with Le Mans stripes and a 540hp 5.4-liter supercharged V8. From 2008-2009, 1,571 models were produced for the US market to match the run of the original 1968 GT500KR priced from $120,000.

And just this year at the New York Auto Show, Shelby American unveiled the Shelby 1000 to mark their 50th anniversary. Adding a Street Legal package for $150,000 to an existing GT500 resulted in 920hp, while the Track Package, priced at $154,000, delivered over 1,100hp. We look forward to discovering whether the new Super Snake manages to surpass these figures. Don't bet against it.
