We've seen some rather bizarre replicas, but this Smart-based Lamborghini replica is in a class of its own.
For many, owning a Lamborghini is a dream. But the truth is only a select few can own a real Raging Bull - especially at the prices they sell for. That hasn't stopped crafty gearheads from making their own Lambos, even if they're based on rather unusual cars - like the Smart ForTwo.
Spotted for sale on eBay, this "Smartborghini" has been styled to mimic the facelifted Gallardo (LP 560-4). It's a rather comical-looking contraption, with the supercar's sleek lines having to comply with the upright stance of the Smart. Vale Automotive, a custom workshop in Northern Ireland, built the vehicle. Used for just a few promotional events, the car was then stored for nearly a decade.
As the Smartborghini was built on a brand-new ForTwo, the vehicle has just 52 miles on the odometer. Some details, such as the faux head- and taillight design, are pretty amusing.
The custom Lamborghini kit includes a front bumper with prominent air vents, side skirts, and fake side vents. At the rear, you'll find a diffuser and four exhaust pipes, along with the cheeky "Smartborghini" badging. The little supercar wannabe is undoubtedly striking and finished in white with orange pinstripes and black trim. A set of 19-inch Lamborghini three-piece replica wheels are tucked into the arches.
Inside, no expense was spared-the leather/Alcantara-trimmed interior features diamond-stitched upholstery, replete with embroidered Lamborghini logos on the headrests. The entire dashboard has been covered in plush fabric, while new air vents and controls have been added to provide a more luxurious feel.
You wouldn't want to drive the Smartborghini in the rain, though, as it has no roof. Described as a "permanent roadster," it's very close to Smart's Crossblade, a rare iteration of the city car with no roof, windshield, or doors.
The vehicle is not roadworthy, as the lights are not functional, but that's a quick fix. The seller notes the wacky Smart would make for an "ideal advertising vehicle" or even a gift for a child. At £11,999 (approx. $15,000), it's not affordable, but the buyer will at least benefit from a new battery and tires.
It's certainly a fun little thing, but $15,000 is steep - that can buy you a nice modern classic or lightly used budget car. Then again, it's a lot cheaper than a Lamborghini Huracan Spyder. While it's nowhere near as quick as the topless Lambo, it will certainly get as much (if not more) attention.
The Smartborghini is one of the more interesting Lambo tributes we've seen, but it's not the best. That accolade goes to this incredible Diablo GT replica. Sadly, a first-gen Acura NSX had to die for the fake Diablo to live.
